Thank you for considering a volunteer opportunity at the Salvation Army Simi Valley Extension Center! Salvation Army Simi Valley Food Pantry Volunteer Organization Overview: The Salvation Army Simi Valley is a food pantry program that has been established in the Simi Valley community for over 10 years. Our food pantry combines access to healthy food with other social services to help our clients receive a hand up and not just a handout.
As a food pantry worker, all the duties that you perform allows us to be even more competent and efficient in helping the food pantry operate smoothly in order for us to serve the community in which we serve.
The Food Pantry Worker is responsible for carrying out the following types of activities (including, but not limited to). Performs food pantry and warehouse work necessary to provide food assistance to agency clients including:
• Food donation sorting and storage, inventory checking, stocking pantry shelves and coolers, discard of waste.
• Work to insure effective and efficient pantry and warehouse operations.
• Culling of fruit and produce to maintain appropriate product quality
• Works in a safe manner and complies with all safety rules and procedures. Promotes team safety.
• Keep all shelves organized, clean, well-stocked, and properly rotated.
• Assist in the unloading of food truck deliveries from local businesses and partners.
• Ensure work station provided is clean and debris free at the end of the shift.
• Conducts housekeeping to assure that work areas meet USDA standards for cleanliness and that areas are organized, clean, safe, and clutter free.
• Have a courteous and professional manner with donors, volunteers, visitors, community members, agency partners, and others.
• Supports successful food drives and pickups as directed including occasional Saturday and seasonal work.
• Assist clients during their shopping experience, assist in preparing unhoused food bags and kits
• Attends staff and training meetings as directed.
• Able to accept extra assignments if possible, as needed or requested.
REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS:
• Must be at least 18
• Positive attitude
• Must complete orientation and training.
• Able to lift up to 30 lbs. on a regular basis.
• Must be honest, fair, and courteous.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Ability to problem solve.
• Ability to work under fast paced situations.
• Able to work as a team player.
• Willing to follow directions
• Must be dependable, motivated, and a self-starter.
• Reliable, personal transportation required.
Things to know about volunteering at the Salvation Army Simi Valley:
• All volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes; no heels, open-toe shoes, or sandals are allowed inside the warehouse. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing – such as jeans, t-shirt, and tennis shoes.
• Upon registering as a volunteer, all volunteers will be prompted to fill out TSA Volunteer Application. This is a requirement that all have to do before they can volunteer.
• At this moment, all volunteers must register ahead of time; we do not currently accept any walk-ins. Volunteer shifts operate on a first come, first serve basis. If your desired volunteer shift is full, you can add yourself to the waitlist and a member of our team will contact you if a spot opens up, or you can see where there is a second choice availability is open.
