Who We Are

Mission: To enhance educational opportunities for children who are experiencing homelessness from kindergarten through twelfth grade.

School on Wheels was founded in 1993 by Agnes Stevens, a retired schoolteacher, who understood the importance of education to students devastated by homelessness—and the unique challenges they face. We were then, and we remain, the only organization in Southern California dedicated exclusively to the educational needs of this fragile population. Our goal is to shrink the gaps in their learning and provide them with the highest level of education possible. Our program serves as a consistent support system for our students during a time of great stress and fear.

What We Do

Children experiencing homelessness face challenges that make their academic success extremely difficult. School on Wheels is looking for volunteer tutors to help overcome these obstacles. Volunteer tutors are the heart of School on Wheels and we provide them with the training and resources to best support their students. School on Wheels volunteers provide free tutoring and mentoring to children from kindergarten through twelfth grade living in shelters, motels, vehicles, group foster homes, and the streets of Southern California. Our tutors are positive role models and through weekly tutoring they help their students succeed in school. Tutors come from all backgrounds and professions and make a huge difference!
