Description

Mountains Restoration Trust has been working on aquatics restoration projects in the Malibu Creek Watershed for the past 10 years. MRT has dedicated to restoring the stream habitat back to functioning state through invasive species removal. Our efforts are largely focused on removal of red swamp crayfish. Crayfish are detrimental to the ecosystem in a variety of ways including removing habitat and resources from native aquatic fauna, removing aquatic plants, destabilizing stream banks through burrowing, decreasing water quality, etc..

Aquatic invasive species removal is accomplished largely through the use of mechanical trapping in streams to physically remove the target organism. Volunteers will begin the project with a short introduction on stream ecology and our protocols including stream safety and equipment use. Biotechnicians and volunteers will be busy servicing the traps and taking ecological data on the removed organisms.
