Wellness and Caregiver Center of Ventura County

Who We Are

The Wellness and Caregiver Center of Ventura County is a department of the Camarillo Health Care District, a community-based health organization that provides innovative health and wellness services to residents of Camarillo/Somis and Ventura County. The Wellness and Caregiver Center was created to meet the growing social and emotional needs of family caregivers caring for a loved one with a chronic illness, such as Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, Parkinson’s disease, or stroke. The Center offers a variety of educational and supportive services, including evidence-based classes on chronic disease management, diabetes prevention and management, fall prevention, and caring for a loved one with dementia. We also offer weekly support groups, private care consultations, respite services, and home modification programs. The Wellness and Caregiver Center is also home to the Senior Support Line, which provides telephone reassurance calls and referral services to socially isolated and home-bound seniors across Ventura County. The Senior Support Line is staffed by clinically trained interns and volunteers who answer incoming calls and provide weekly outreach calls to seniors living in the community.

What We Do

The Senior Support Line (SSL) is a program of the Wellness and Caregiver Center, which is a department of the Camarillo Health Care District (www.camhealth.com). The goal of the SSL is to provide telephone reassurance, socialization, peer counseling, and on-going assessment to homebound or socially isolated seniors residing in Ventura County. We welcome volunteers with professional and friendly telephone skills and an interest in engaging with and learning about the lives of older adults and the “oldest old” (those above the age of 85). Good judgement, a sense of professional boundaries, and strong listening skills are essential. Interns work in four-hour shifts, 1x or 2x per week on the SSL. They make weekly outreach calls to seniors who have joined our telephone reassurance program, many of whom are socially isolated and/or home-bound. Volunteers answer incoming calls to the line and provide resources and referrals to community services as needed. Volunteers receive a comprehensive orientation and 8-9 hours of training. In addition, they receive weekly supervision from a Master Level Social Worker to ensure a high-quality experience for clients and volunteers alike.
