Are you a social person who values connecting with others? We are looking for volunteers who are open to spending quality time and having a conversation with someone who may be frail or homebound. Social isolation is devastating for older individuals, this program is aimed at combating the impact of loneliness.

Volunteers may assist with social activities, transportation, home management, or provide companionship. This is not a medical or caregiver position.

Volunteers are matched with seniors based upon interests, needs, background and personality. They are asked to set aside 2 to 4 hours per week to visit with their senior friend.

Background check will be performed. All volunteers must be 55 years or older!

Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance (TCMBB) is a new exercise class being offered through RSVP, a volunteer recruitment/placement program which also oversees the popular RSVP Bone Builders classes. The eight forms used in TCMBB have been proven through scientific study to improve balance and strength among participants.

We are looking for volunteers to train as instructors. No prior experience with Tai Chi is required, although it is preferable. Training consists of visiting one of our classes (in Ventura, Oxnard or Camarillo), completing a three-day class with our master trainers, and practicing the forms before becoming certified. There is no charge for being trained, but we do request a commitment to teach at least two 12-week sessions of the free class once certified.

Instructors must be 55 or older to qualify for RSVP.

As a Volunteer Instructor you will lead twice weekly 90-minute classes over a 12-week period. Volunteer Instructors co-teach with a partner, allowing flexibility for vacation and personal days. Class size is small and participants are typically seniors.

As we do with Bone Builders classes, there is also an emphasis on making friends and connections with others in the class.

Looking to improve your health while helping others? Want to make new friends while making a difference?

The award-winning RSVP Bone Builders program is an osteoporosis exercise and education program with a strong emphasis on the social and fun side of working out. Must be 55 or better.

As a Volunteer Instructor, you will lead twice-weekly exercise classes (about an hour each time) that use light weights and exercises that are performed either sitting or standing next to a chair. Volunteer Instructors co-teach with a partner, allowing flexibility for vacation and personal days.

Class size is small. Participants are typically seniors, age 55 and older. Classes are free, noncompetitive and designed to improve muscle strength, balance and bone density.

Training includes visiting at least two of the existing 21 classes in west Ventura County, attending a 7-hour training class (held quarterly) and then returning to observe three more classes. Instructors are also asked to attend quarterly inservice trainings where up-to-date information is provided.

CHAT (Call Him/Her And Talk) is all about connecting seniors to check in on one another. And it’s a great way to volunteer on your own time, from the comfort of your own home.

CHAT volunteers must be willing to call senior clients two times a week, Monday through Saturday between 10am and 4pm. Calls should be no longer than 15-30 mins, and volunteers can call one or as many as three seniors at scheduled times. Clients will be matched by interest, hobbies, and various criteria with volunteers to help make conversations natural.

Access TLC Health Care is looking for caring and compassionate volunteers to visit with our patients. Each of our patients and their families are dealing with a terminal diagnosis, and your visits will mean the world to them. Someone to read or watch TV, listen to music, play games or just to give them the opportunity to share some of their life stories. Assisted Home Health and Hospice Foundation is looking for enthusiastic dog walkers in Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties for our “Hands to Cuddle, Paws to Love” program. Our program aims to help families and pets together until the end. We’re looking for volunteers  that are able to help keep pets and loved ones together  during  times when health related illness prevent them for caring for their pets. Our volunteer dog walker opportunity consists of our volunteers walking dogs approximately 1 to 2 times a week, per assignment, allowing the dogs to remain happy and healthy.

If you are a Clinically Licensed Behavioral Health Practitioner, we have an incredible volunteer opportunity and upcoming training that allows mental health professionals to make a difference in their military community!

The Red Cross teaches resiliency skills through three impactful programs—Coping with Deployments, Reconnection Workshops, and Mind-Body Workshops. The programs provide tools to address the challenges and stress of military life and reintegration with family and community.

All resiliency programs are confidential and led by licensed mental health professionals with additional Red Cross training.

Eligibility Requirement: Master’s level or higher mental health professional with independent, clinical and unencumbered license in one of the following disciplines: Psychiatry, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, School Counseling/Psychology; Nursing (APN or CS in Mental Health area; RN’s who are board certified in Psy/MH).

Note: To be eligible, you must have an independent license and not be under clinical supervision.

VITAS is looking for caring individuals to share their voice and time as Proactive Caller Volunteers to help terminally ill patients and their families.

If you enjoy talking on the phone and have time to make check-in calls, you may be a perfect ProActive Caller Volunteer.

Our Proactive volunteers make “check-in” phone calls to our hospice patients and their family members.  

You can work from your dorm room, apartment, home, or the VITAS office. You’ll call patients at home, asking how they are doing, checking on needed supplies, listening, and identifying any service concerns.

The Senior Concerns’ Meals On Wheels program ensures homebound seniors get to eat nutritious, freshly prepared meals by delivering meals to their doorstep. More than 85 community volunteers bring close to 30,000 nutritionally balanced hot lunches and light meals to seniors in Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park 365 days a year.

In addition to the delicious food, prepared in the kitchens of Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center in accordance with nutritional dietary guidelines, Meals On Wheels’ volunteers deliver holiday gifts and surprises, as well as daily smiles and friendly conversation to seniors.

Bargain Boutique and Thrift Store - 3 hours, Monday-Saturday. Volunteers sort merchandise, organize displays, assist customers, answer the phone, use the cash register, and any other general retail tasks.

VITAS Healthcare® is looking for kind and caring massage therapists to pamper hospice patients living at home, in the hospital or in long term care facilities.

A terminally ill patient’s sense of isolation is often made worse by the lack of comforting human touch. Muscles may be contracted and stiff. Patients may spend their days immobile in a recliner or bed. Knowledgeable massage therapists can offer compassionate touch, relaxation, a sense of well-being and emotional health.

For the volunteer, getting to know someone at the end of life is a gift in itself. All VITAS volunteers receive orientation in end-of-life care. VITAS massage-therapy volunteers must have a current massage license. This is a great opportunity for you to give back to the community. VITAS wants to enlist your services to care for terminally ill veterans living at home and in nursing homes, assisted living communities and medical centers. VITAS Veteran Volunteers may or may not be U.S. military veterans themselves.

They are trained to meet the specific needs of terminally ill veterans living in their own homes, nursing homes, assisted living communities and veterans’ medical centers. Our Veteran Volunteers visit terminally ill veterans; drive and/or accompany a veteran to appointments, shopping and other events; help a veteran apply for benefits or learn about available assistance; help replace lost or stolen military medals by contacting appropriate agencies; listen to life stories or record or videotape a veteran’s reminiscences; telephone veterans to ask how they are doing; attend or help plan activities celebrating Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day; educate veteran’s groups about hospice services by speaking at their meetings. Volunteer orientation teaches the skills required to be a hospice volunteer.

VITAS Veteran Volunteers are further trained to meet specific end-of-life needs of veterans to improve their quality of life. Time and dates are ongoing and flexible. Orientation and training to be a VITAS Veteran Volunteer is free. Veterans enjoy receiving visitors—people who will listen to their fading memories and reminiscences. Pampering can include: polishing and buffing nails; gentle shampoo, set and style; haircut; helping with makeup. Patients have very sensitive skin therefore, no curlers/curling irons or chemicals will be used. A current Cosmetology License is required.

The Association is seeking compassionate and motivated volunteers to engage people living with dementia. The Alzheimer's Association will call you for an interview and provide online and self-study materials to support your learning in this volunteer role. CAREGIVERS is currently looking for Adult Team Leaders that are willing to mentor and direct a team of about 2-3 high school students with light household chores for frail and homebound seniors.

As an adult team leader you will go out once a week on a designated date and time for about 45 min - 1 hr. At the senior's home, you will be supervising the students while they help with light housekeeping and yardword.

Ventura Land Trust owns almost 30 acres in the Ventura River, and manages close to 100 acres total, including the beautiful Ventura River Estuary. Once known locally as the "Hobo Jungle", the Estuary is an extremely important coastal wetland containing an estimated 600 species of plants and providing habitat for thousands of shorebirds, fish, and other animals. Since receiving our Willoughby Preserve in 2012, VLT and our partners have removed 2 million pounds of trash from this sensitive natural area. We generally host volunteer cleanups and restoration events on the third Saturday of each month, and hundreds of people join us throughout the year to lend a hand.

We seek applicants who can create and maintain a safe environment and respect the group process allowing all members to share. The Alzheimer's Association will call you for an interview and provide online and self-study materials to support your learning in this volunteer role. The Longest Day is the day with the most light (June 20, Summer Solstice) and it's the day that we fight the darkness that is Alzheimer's disease. This is the Alzheimer's Association's Do It Yourself (DIY) styled fundraiser where people participate through and activity of their choice. People have raised money through bowling, by having dinner parties, hosting golf tournaments, having lemonade stands and everything in between - As long as there is a fundraising aspect to the event it counts. 

We are looking for people to join our committee and help us bring in as many participants as possible. The committee meets once a month (usually the first Thursday) for about an hour and a half and then any time required outside of that meeting will be you recruiting people for The Longest Day and attending the occasional event (~1 a quarter). If you are a mover and shaker who wants to help us reach as many people as possible please reach out to us, we'd love to talk!

CEDC is seeking volunteers to help facilitate CEDC’s afterschool program! Homework Club is offered at several of CEDC's affordable housing properties throughout the county, and offer free tutoring and mentorship to the children living in these properties. Our Homework Club provides homework assistance, positive role-modeling, and de-stressing and engaging activities to a diverse group of youth, from elementary through high school. Each Homework Club is supervised by a CEDC staff member, but without volunteers, not every student can get the one-on-one assistance that they might need.

Homework Club involves approximately 45 minutes of helping the children with their homework, followed by approximately 45 minutes of an activity of either the volunteer’s or CEDC staff member’s choosing. The activity can be arts and crafts, reading, STEM related activities, games, or any activity of volunteer’s choosing that is fun and engaging for the kids.

Volunteering opportunities are offered at various CEDC properties in Ventura and Oxnard. Homework Club is a recurring event, taking place every Monday-Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hours are flexible if you must arrive later. If interested, we can work together to determine which Homework Club site works best for you.

VITAS Healthcare® is looking for volunteers who are able to share their time with hospice patients living at home, in the hospital or in long term care facilities. Hospice volunteers give their time to terminally ill patients and their caregivers during a critical time. In orientation classes they are trained in listening skills, family dynamics and the right words to say to patients and their loved ones at the end of life.

Visits made by our volunteers not only help each patient, but the families are truly touched as well. The shortest conversation can have the largest impact. VITAS volunteers provide relief care for caregivers, offer companionship for the patient, run errands and help in other meaningful ways. 

 This is a great opportunity for you to give back to the community. By taking a small amount of time out of your busy week you can make the biggest difference in another’s life.

VITAS invites friendly and well-behaved pets to join the Paw Pals program, in which animals and their humans learn how to visit patients at the end of their life. A registered VITAS Paw Pals visitor can offer comfort, bring back memories, encourage activity and provide unconditional love to VITAS patients. Your visits leave behind memories of you and your pet, and rekindle thoughts of other pets. 

Pet visits can sometimes reach a patient when no one else can. Our Paw Pals brightens the day for everyone when they visit.

All kinds of pets are invited to join VITAS Paw Pals Club.

Paw Pals must be well-groomed, at least one- year old, and have up-to-date health records. 

VITAS wants to enlist your services to care for terminally ill veterans living at home and in nursing homes, assisted living communities and medical centers. 

VITAS Veteran Volunteers may or may not be U.S. military veterans themselves. They are trained to meet the specific needs of terminally ill veterans living in their own homes, nursing homes, assisted living communities and veterans’ medical centers. 

Our Veteran Volunteers visit terminally ill veterans; drive and/or accompany a veteran to appointments, shopping and other events; help a veteran apply for benefits or learn about available assistance; help replace lost or stolen military medals by contacting appropriate agencies; listen to life stories or record or videotape a veteran’s reminiscences; telephone veterans to ask how they are doing; attend or help plan activities celebrating Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day; educate veteran’s groups about hospice services by speaking at their meetings.

Volunteer orientation teaches the skills required to be a hospice volunteer. VITAS Veteran Volunteers are further trained to meet specific end-of-life needs of veterans to improve their quality of life. Time and dates are ongoing and flexible. Orientation and training to be a VITAS Veteran Volunteer is free.

Veterans enjoy receiving visitors—people who will listen to their fading memories and reminiscences. Some veterans need transportation to appointments, shopping and other events. Others may need help applying for benefits or researching other kinds of assistance. VITAS Veteran Volunteers learn to help.

Advancing Parenting needs members of the community, at least two, to sit on our board of directors.  

Advancing Parenting is a small nonprofit organization pioneering a new kind of parenting education...one that reaches everyone, everywhere, all the time.  We place fifty-one concise and unambiguous parenting tips/advice in public spaces, including but not limited to windows of stores, offices, restaurants, automobiles, and billboards.  This, in an effort to elevate the quality of parenting, prevent adverse childhood experiences (ACES), and improve educational outcomes for children.  Visit our website, advancingparenting.org, to read about our activities.  

We meet once per year in the fall and meetings take about thirty minutes.

Please consider this opportunity.  Nonprofits are run by boards.  Without a board Advancing Parenting will have to close its doors.

Volunteer Liaisons are needed to make phone calls to small groups of CAREGIVERS volunteers on a monthly basis. Liaisons can help CAREGIVERS' staff with outreach, and keeping volunteers informed. They can also help us keep track of how things are going with volunteers and homebound seniors they may be visiting in the community.
