We need your help to keep great books accessible to communities 24/7. Visit Little Free Libraries in your community to distribute books! 

We can suggest where to look for free or inexpensive books, or if you already have some, you can share those too. You can find book-sharing boxes near you using our world map or free mobile app.

Communities are hungry for books! Help Little Free Library fulfill its mission of book access for everyone by coordinating a local book drive. Ventura County Fire Department instructors teach this six-week week course, one evening per week. 

Mondays, September 8 through October 13th.  The final exercise will be held on Saturday, October 18. 

Participants learn valuable emergency preparedness and response skills for self, family and community.

WriteGirl is Seeking Writing Mentors and Support Volunteers

Get inspired! Make an impact! Support the voices of teens and be part of a positive community of creative writers!

WriteGirl, now in its 25th season, is a creative writing and mentoring organization that empowers teen girls/gender-expansive youth in Los Angeles and around the world through mentoring relationships with women/gender-expansive writers. You may have seen us in the news as the mentoring organization where Inaugural Poet Amanda Gorman got her start! Mentors work with teens one-on-one (online and sometimes in-person), and participate in group writing workshops online. While most programming takes place online, WriteGirl does present some in-person events in Los Angeles and other cities. WriteGirl is particularly seeking mentors throughout the U.S. and abroad who can mentor teens virtually. WriteGirl is based in Los Angeles, but volunteers can join from anywhere. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program assists individuals and families who have a household income of less than $69,000. Trained volunteers prepare and electronically file state and federal tax returns assisting filers to claim the credits for which they are eligible.

VITA sites will be open for in-person tax preparation services at multiple locations across Ventura County with weekday, evening, and weekend options available. 

Join our team of volunteers, working collaboratively to assist low and moderate income earners in our community increase their financial stability.

Intake/Screening Volunteer: Will receive training on how to assist the tax filer to complete the intake form and how to review their paperwork to ensure they have everything necessary to complete their tax return.  Bilingual English/Spanish speaking volunteers are especially needed.

 Volunteers must successfully complete the IRS online Standards of Conduct and Intake/Interview certifications.

Intake/Screening volunteers are asked to commit 3-4 hours per week between February 1 and April 30.

The Habitat Ventura Event Team meets on the second Tuesday of every month from 6-7:30 pm (sometimes in person and sometimes on Zoom) to support our annual large events and fundraisers, and we’d love your support! We need help with creating decor, gathering auction items, doing phone call and canvassing outreach to promote events, and support on event days. Individuals and small groups experienced at some home repair and maintenance (or interested in learning more about it) are needed to assist our Habitat Home Repair program with projects around the Ventura County. These vary from minor to major, and include: installing energy-efficient windows, repairing electrical wiring, building ramps, putting in grab bars, and much more! Saticoy Community Fridge is a community-led project that provides a refrigerator in Saticoy where all people can access free food. The Saticoy Community Fridge team is interested in building new structures of support that create opportunities for community solidarity while de-emphasizing traditional forms of charity and philanthropy. We collect food donations from local producers, farmers, and community members and distribute them at our Saticoy Food Hub office. 

Your help can look like:

1. Cleaning & restocking

Maintenance tasks include but are not limited to: sweeping, mopping,wiping down surfaces, cleaning inside and outside the fridge, watering plants, 

Restocking is also part of cleaning because we want to make sure the fridge and pantry are always clean and full. 

This also includes checking for spoilage and sorting through donations. 

Volunteers can refer to the daily checklist in the office for a current and more specific list of chores. 

2. Sorting and organizing 

The food donations we receive need to be inspected and sorted upon arrival. This means separating bad, moldy or rotten food as well as expired food. The food then needs to get organized and put at the front fridge and pantry or in the back storage

3. Donation Pick-ups

You may be asked to pick up local donations from around Saticoy. Feel free to use a wagon, bike, Dooley, etc to facilitate transportation. 

All other pickup roles are for those who have a car they can bring.

5. Gleaning 

Gleaning is the act of harvesting leftover or excess crops from farmers fields, neighbors gardens and possibly restaurants.

Depending on the amount of fruit, you can do this individually or with a team. 

6.  Compost maintenance 

We have a compost bin across the street in the Saticoy Library parking lot. 

Office compost bin needs to be taken out daily 

The compost bin needs to have a balance of green and brown material. Ideally a 2:1 ratio of brown to green, but 1:1 or half and half is fine too. 

Volunteer hours can vary but the Community Fridge is open Tuesday-Friday from 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Saticoy Food Hub (SFH) relies mostly on funding through grants and foundations. This position will uplift our mission, voice, and vision to potential funders to increase financial sustainability. They will seek to write, submit, and organize grant opportunities for the organization. These opportunities may align with grants based on agricultural, food security, resilient communities, economic opportunities, or climate action outcomes. The right volunteer will share SFH values and be willing to learn how we operate, to better position our programs to the wide variety of grant opportunities available.


Responsibilities include:
• Identify grant funding opportunities
• Catalog potential volunteer opportunities and develop a calendar
• Write and submit grant proposals
• Organize deliverables outlined in each grant for staff/volunteers to meet metrics
• Furnish prospective funders with supporting documents
• Collaborate with Executive Director and Board of Directors to organize long-term strategies for fund development
• Assist in developing strategies for evaluation and data management


Please, provide a resume or list of relevant experience in grant writing, fund development, program management, or technical writing.

This position is remote, but candidates who are nearby are more than welcome to visit or work in person. Time commitment: 5-10 hours per week. Staff are often available most work days after 10:00 am PST until 8:00 pm PST. There is flexibility and an openness to meet on weekends or early morning, on occasion. Depending on any constraints put on by time hour differences.
Requested length of service: A minimum of 6 months to learn the organization and complete a grant. However, SFH would prefer a longer-term volunteer for an entire fiscal year.

Important responsibilities for this role is include helping event days run smoothly. For this position, volunteers can get involved with planning, execution, and day of tasks for the Saticoy Farmers Market. They take place on the first Sunday of each month. Tasks as an Farmers Market volunteer include:

Camarillo Ranch Docents learn about the Camarillo legacy to share local history with visitors. Docent-guided tours of the Camarillo family’s 1892 Queen Anne Victorian home provide access to all 15 rooms.  Items belonging to the Camarillo family, historical photographs, and furnishings bring to life the colorful stories shared by docents.  Step outside and take in lovely views of the front lawn and gardens from the home’s generous wraparound porch.

Docents

Who: Glean Team Leaders (GTLs) are trained volunteers who collect produce at Farmers Market "gleaning" events. If you are passionate about fighting hunger & food waste in your own community and are detail-oriented, you will love being a Glean Team Leader! You must be at least 16 years old to train as a GTL, and volunteers 16 - 17 years old must have a parent or legal guardian who trains and volunteers with them. 

What: At the Channel Islands market, GTLs can glean on their own or with one or two other trained GTLs. GTLs distribute empty boxes to participating vendors, collect the food donations at the end of the market, weigh and record the donations, and prepare the produce for pick-up by one of Food Forward’s partner hunger relief receiving agencies.

You may need to lift boxes weighing up to 40 pounds, and you’ll need a smartphone to record donations or send us a photograph of the record. Food Forward provides liability insurance for the event.

When: The market glean is on Sundays from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. We ask Glean Team Leaders to commit to volunteering at 6 market events over the course of a year or less. Of course, if you’d like to volunteer more, we’d be thrilled. Shifts are about 1 hour long. 

How: We'll have you check out a glean at the market first with a trained Glean Team Leader. If you love it, we'll get you through the rest of our training and paperwork process! A background check (free to you) is required.

Our literacy organization needs tutors in Oxnard. We provide all training and materials three times a year. Our next training is Saturday, May 17, 2025. You do not need to speak a foreign language or be a teacher.

Laubach Literacy is seeking adults to serve on its board of directors. We are looking for people interested in furthering our mission to tutor adults who want to learn or improve their English. Board members do not need to know a second language or be a tutor. While previous work on a nonprofit board is helpful, it is not required. We are looking for anyone who has time and enthusiasm for what we do. We are looking for people who have a few hours a month to help with running our small all-volunteer organization. We have no paid staff. The board meets every other month, except August,  in the evening at our office. Our annual meeting is in July, when we elect new officers and board members. You do not need to be a current member of Laubach Literacy of Ventura County. People with skills in social media outreach are needed. We have a mix of actively employed and retired people who serve on our board of 4 members. We have insurance for our board members and officers. EACH ONE TEACH ONE

The challenges for those that lost their home in the Mountain Fire last November have not lessened. Recovery from a disaster takes time, months and years of exhaustion. The transition from immediate relief to starting the marathon of rebuilding their lives can be daunting.

Thankfully, community members and organizations of all kinds have come together to assist in recovery efforts – supporting the fire survivors as they secure new housing, navigate the rebuilding process, and heal.  Experienced, volunteer Disaster Case Managers are working on the Mountain Fire Recovery effort providing support to more than 100 households that lost their home.  In conversations with clients they learn of some basic essential items that would help their recovery. 

We have compiled a list of those items into an Amazon list that will go to households whose loss has been verified and are working with a disaster case manager on a realistic recovery plan. 3)  Stand for 2-2.5 hours.

Who is receiving the food? Ventura County clients in need of food assistance.

What time are the clients arriving? They start lining up at 10am.

What time does the distribution start? 2:00PM (earlier if we are ready to launch).

What will you be doing? Depending on your shift time:

12:30pm-4:00pm shift will help register clients name, address, zip, number in household, answering one question, and placing a tag/ticket onto windshield. Be able to stand for three-four hours. Please hydrate before arriving. 

1:30-4pm shift will help us run a drive through pop-up food pantry at College Park. You will be placing boxes of food into trunks of cars (Produce boxes weigh 12-13 lb. & Food Share food box is15lb), traffic control (telling cars when they need to stop and when they can leave), and breakdown at this site.  Be able to stand for three-four hours. Please hydrate before arriving. 

When does this take place? Every Wednesday year-round

Saticoy Farmers Market offers fun and educational activities for visitors of all ages. Activities change with each market. Possible Fun Zone themes include: living soil, native plants, or seasonal produce.

When: Extremely flexible! You can let us know what days and times you prefer to volunteer, but we ask Harvest Leaders to commit to volunteering at 6 harvest events over the course of a year or less. Of course, if you’d like to volunteer more, we’d be thrilled. Harvest events take 2-3 hours in total, including setting up before and wrapping up after.

Where: We harvest fruit (and some veggies too) all across Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, although we need Harvest Leaders in Fillmore specifically.

Why: We often have more fruit-filled properties than we are able to harvest. Without more Harvest Leaders, that fruit will go to waste! A Harvest Leader and a few other volunteers will harvest hundreds of pounds of food to donate at an average harvest event.

HICAP, short for Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program, is funded through the Older American Act. The United States Department of Aging sends funding to the Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services. HICAP is a national volunteer Medicare program that gives free and unbiased counseling, and comparisons on all Medicare Health Insurance and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans. The HICAP program also resolves Medicare, HMO, and prescription drug complaints for Medicare beneficiaries.

Specific Duties
Medicare billing claims and problems, Medicare supplement insurance, MA Plans and prescription drug plans, long-term care insurance, and other related health insurance plans and products;

• Advocacy – Assist consumers to ensure that their rights under Medicare and other applicable federal and California laws or regulations are upheld, make referrals to legal services and/or other agencies, and provide other interventions as needed.
• Record Keeping – Maintain accurate records on all client contacts and services provided, perform computer input of client/counseling data into the CDA HICAP database, and provide any other data/information as requested by the Program Manager.
• Counseling – Provide individual counseling and informational services to Medicare beneficiaries, their advocates and individuals imminent of Medicare eligibility regarding Medicare billing claims and problems, Medicare supplement insurance, Medicare Advantage Plans and prescription drug plans, long-term care insurance, and other related health insurance plans and products.

Specific Requirements
• Service Location – The HICAP counselor will provide HICAP services from a designated or approved service site, such as a hospital, library, senior center, etc., or on occasion, a client’s home when the client is homebound.
• Confidentiality and Conflict of Interest – The protection of a client’s right to privacy is mandated by State and federal law. All counselors must abide by an agreement that assures client and program confidentiality and assures compliance with conflict-of-interest directives.
• Time Commitment – All counselors must agree to a length of service commitment of at least one year and provide a minimum of 40 hours of counseling/service in a 12-month calendar year period in order to maintain registered status. Counselors must also agree to annually participate in a minimum of 12-hours of continuing education on an annual calendar year basis.

Do you want to share your love of reading? The Adult Literacy Center at the Camarillo Public Library needs volunteer tutors to help adults improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills. We can train you to work with adults in one-on-one sessions to tutor them in reading and writing. No experience is necessary; only a love of reading, a desire to help, and the ability to commit to at least 6 months of volunteering is required. Must be at least 18 years of age to become a tutor.

We are currently using ProLitercy for online tutor training, it is a self-paced program that at minimum takes 12 hours to complete. 

The UWVC Landlord Engagement Program connects individuals and families with housing vouchers and subsidies to available rental units. As our neighbors are getting housed, we want to welcome them and get them started in their new homes. Please join in our excitement and put together a basket to welcome our newly housed neighbors!

Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance (TCMBB) is a new exercise class being offered through RSVP, a volunteer recruitment/placement program which also oversees the popular RSVP Bone Builders classes. The eight forms used in TCMBB have been proven through scientific study to improve balance and strength among participants.

We are looking for volunteers to train as instructors. No prior experience with Tai Chi is required, although it is preferable. Training consists of visiting one of our classes (in Ventura, Oxnard or Camarillo), completing a three-day class with our master trainers, and practicing the forms before becoming certified. There is no charge for being trained, but we do request a commitment to teach at least two 12-week sessions of the free class once certified.

Instructors must be 55 or older to qualify for RSVP.

As a Volunteer Instructor you will lead twice weekly 90-minute classes over a 12-week period. Volunteer Instructors co-teach with a partner, allowing flexibility for vacation and personal days. Class size is small and participants are typically seniors.

As we do with Bone Builders classes, there is also an emphasis on making friends and connections with others in the class.

The award-winning RSVP Bone Builders program is an osteoporosis exercise and education program with a strong emphasis on the social and fun side of working out. Must be 55 or better.

As a Volunteer Instructor, you will lead twice-weekly exercise classes (about an hour each time) that use light weights and exercises that are performed either sitting or standing next to a chair. Volunteer Instructors co-teach with a partner, allowing flexibility for vacation and personal days.

Class size is small. Participants are typically seniors, age 55 and older. Classes are free, noncompetitive and designed to improve muscle strength, balance and bone density.

Training includes visiting at least two of the existing 21 classes in west Ventura County, attending a 7-hour training class (held quarterly) and then returning to observe three more classes. Instructors are also asked to attend quarterly inservice trainings where up-to-date information is provided.

Calls should be no longer than 15-30 mins, and volunteers can call one or as many as three seniors at scheduled times. Assisted Home Health and Hospice Foundation is looking for enthusiastic dog walkers in Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties for our “Hands to Cuddle, Paws to Love” program. Our program aims to help families and pets together until the end. We’re looking for volunteers  that are able to help keep pets and loved ones together  during  times when health related illness prevent them for caring for their pets. Our volunteer dog walker opportunity consists of our volunteers walking dogs approximately 1 to 2 times a week, per assignment, allowing the dogs to remain happy and healthy. 

If you are an animal lover looking to volunteer for a pet program that helps make a difference in the community-we’d like to hear from you!
