Volunteer: Travel Unity Volunteer

Travel Unity welcomes volunteers who want to support our work making travel more welcoming to people of all backgrounds and identities.

Volunteers contribute in different ways depending on their interests and skills, including research, outreach, storytelling, events, partnerships, and workforce development initiatives.

As an initial step, new volunteers complete a short project to demonstrate engagement. Volunteers can choose between two options:

Spotlight – Interview a travel industry professional and write a short profile about their work and career path.

Case Study – Research and document an organization’s work in the travel industry.

Those interested in volunteering should first complete the Travel Unity volunteer application:
https://bit.ly/TUvolunteerapp

After submitting the application, we will follow up with next steps.

Volunteer: Harvest Fruit and Fight Hunger in Ventura!

Who: Do you like fighting hunger & food waste in your own community, making your own volunteer schedule, and working outside? You may love being a Harvest Leader! Harvest Leaders are trained volunteers who harvest fruit all across Southern California.

You must be at least 16 years old to train as a Harvest Leader, and volunteers 16 - 17 years old must have a parent or legal guardian who trains and volunteers with them.

What: Harvest Leaders can choose to harvest fruit trees in any of the following ways: (1) by themselves; (2) with family and/or friends; or (3) by leading harvest events that are open to volunteers from the public (which Food Forward recruits for you). Food Forward communicates with homeowners and managers of private properties, parks, farms, and orchards who are interested in donating their fruit. We’ll help you identify a property and a time that works for you to harvest. You just need to bring some equipment (which we’ll give you), register any people joining you and help them get started, and harvest as much fruit as possible!

You will need to be comfortable lifting boxes weighing 20 pounds. You’ll also need reliable access to a vehicle to transport harvesting equipment and deliver the produce to a local hunger relief agency. Food Forward provides liability insurance for the event.

When: Extremely flexible! You can let us know what days and times you prefer to volunteer, but we ask Harvest Leaders to commit to volunteering at 6 harvest events over the course of a year or less. Of course, if you’d like to volunteer more, we’d be thrilled. Harvest events take 2-3 hours in total, including setting up before and wrapping up after.

Where: We harvest fruit (and some veggies too) all across Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, although we need Harvest Leaders in Ventura specifically.

Why: We often have more fruit-filled properties than we are able to harvest. Without more Harvest Leaders, that fruit will go to waste! A Harvest Leader and a few other volunteers will harvest hundreds of pounds of food to donate at an average harvest event.

Joining our Event Leader community also connects you with folks from all walks of life who are passionate about food access, food waste, sustainability, and the outdoors. You’ll have a regular opportunity to make a big impact, and you’ll get to meet some great people and trees along the way.

How: We'll have you check out a harvest with a trained Harvest Leader. If you love it, we'll get you through the rest of our training and paperwork process! A background check (free to you) is required.

***Email volunteer@foodforward.org to let us know you're interested!***

Volunteer: Bike MS: Los Angeles Coastal Challenge 2026 – Bike Mechanical Support Volunteers

Bike Mechanical Support

Join us for the 25th anniversary of Bike MS: Los Angeles Coastal Challenge, an inspiring two day ride along the beautiful California coastline. On May 30 and May 31, 2026, cyclists will travel from Malibu up through Ventura, Rincon, and Ojai, covering more than 150 miles as they raise funds and awareness to support people living with multiple sclerosis. This milestone weekend brings together riders, volunteers, families, and community groups for a memorable experience filled with purpose, connection, and coastal energy.

Volunteer: Fight food waste at the Thousand Oaks Farmers Market on Thursday!

Who: Glean Team Leaders (GTLs) are trained volunteers who collect produce at Farmers Market "gleaning" events. If you are passionate about fighting hunger & food waste in your own community and are detail-oriented, you will love being a Glean Team Leader! You must be at least 16 years old to train as a GTL, and volunteers 16 - 17 years old must have a parent or legal guardian who trains and volunteers with them.

What: At the Thousand Oaks market, GTLs can glean on their own or with one or two other trained GTLs. GTLs distribute empty boxes to participating vendors, collect the food donations at the end of the market, weigh and record the donations, and prepare the produce for pick-up by one of Food Forward’s partner hunger relief receiving agencies.

You may need to lift boxes weighing up to 40 pounds, and you’ll need a smartphone to record donations or send us a photograph of the record. Food Forward provides liability insurance for the event.

When: The market glean is on Thursdays from 3:15pm to 4:30pm. We ask Glean Team Leaders to commit to volunteering at 6 market events over the course of a year or less. Of course, if you’d like to volunteer more, we’d be thrilled. Shifts are about 1 hour long.

How: We'll have you check out a glean at the market first with a trained Glean Team Leader. If you love it, we'll get you through the rest of our training and paperwork process! A background check (free to you) is required.

***Email volunteer@foodforward.org to let us know you're interested!***

Volunteer: Harvest Fruit and Fight Hunger in Thousand Oaks!

Where: We harvest fruit (and some veggies too) all across Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, although we need Harvest Leaders in Thousand Oaks specifically.

Volunteer: Creative Writing Mentors & Support Volunteers Needed!

WriteGirl is Seeking Writing Mentors and Support Volunteers

Get inspired! Make an impact! Support the voices of teens and be part of a positive community of creative writers!

WriteGirl, now in its 25th season, is a creative writing and mentoring organization that empowers teen girls/gender-expansive youth in Los Angeles and around the world through mentoring relationships with women/gender-expansive writers. You may have seen us in the news as the mentoring organization where Inaugural Poet Amanda Gorman got her start! Mentors work with teens one-on-one (online and sometimes in-person), and participate in group writing workshops online. While most programming takes place online, WriteGirl does present some in-person events in Los Angeles and other cities. WriteGirl is particularly seeking mentors throughout the U.S. and abroad who can mentor teens virtually. WriteGirl is based in Los Angeles, but volunteers can join from anywhere. (Get a sneak peek of WriteGirl here!)

WriteGirl is seeking women/gender-expansive writers in all genres including fiction, poetry, journalism, screenwriting, songwriting, copywriting, business writing and more to help mentor teens (girls/gender-expansive youth), inspire them to express their creative ideas, guide them to higher education and careers and be a kind and compassionate role model. One of our notable alums is Inaugural Poet Amanda Gorman, who credits WriteGirl for giving her the confidence to share her creative voice on a national stage. Applicants should have empathy, listening skills, kindness and a passion for helping to inspire young voices. While WriteGirl does not require mentors to be published writers, applicants should have strong creative writing skills and communication skills. We offer weekly, monthly and periodic mentoring opportunities for all of our volunteers.

Support Volunteers: WriteGirl is also looking for ‘support volunteers’ to help WriteGirl behind the scenes with logistics and event preparation. Support Volunteers do not work directly with teens, so a creative writing background is not necessary; these volunteers focus on supporting our programming in a variety of ways.

Screening and Training: All volunteers are required to complete two half-day online orientations/trainings, an intake interview and a criminal background check.

Join a vibrant community of writers and inspire our next generation of writers and leaders!

Apply online: https://www.writegirl.org/volunteer

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, September 12, 2025

Questions? Contact WriteGirl at membership@writegirl.org or call 213-253-2655.

Volunteer: Educate the public about food recovery as a Community Ambassador!

Who: Do you support Food Forward’s mission and enjoy talking to people you don’t know? You may love being a Community Ambassador! Community Ambassadors (CAs) are trained volunteers who spread the word about Food Forward at community events and help others get plugged in to our mission. You must be at least 16 years old to train as a CA, and volunteers 16 - 17 years old must have a parent or legal guardian who trains and volunteers with them. What: Community Ambassadors represent Food Forward by setting up tables at community events across Los Angeles and Ventura counties (such as farmers markets, service fairs, environmental events, or local gatherings) and speaking with people who stop by the table about Food Forward’s work. This could involve giving them a flyer, directing them to a sign-up sheet, and/or answering basic questions about how they can get involved in our work. You may need to lift boxes weighing up to 20 pounds, and you’ll need a smartphone to send us a photo of the information at events. Food Forward provides liability insurance for the event. When: You can set your own schedule based on the events Food Forward plans to attend. We ask CAs to commit to volunteering at 4 tabling events over the course of a year or less. Of course, if you’d like to volunteer more, we’d be thrilled. Shifts vary from 1 1⁄2 - 4 hours, depending on the event. Where: You can choose from a list of events that Food Forward plans to attend across Los Angeles and/or Ventura counties! Why: Food Forward receives many event invitations, and CAs make it possible to attend and connect with people at those events who want to join our crew of volunteers, fruit donors, financial donors, and general supporters. Joining our Event Leader community also connects you with folks from all walks of life who are passionate about food access, food waste, sustainability, and agriculture. You’ll have a regular opportunity to make a big impact, and you’ll connect folks to a cause they care about!

Volunteer: Saticoy Community Fridge Volunteer

Saticoy Community Fridge is a community-led project that provides a refrigerator in Saticoy where all people can access free food. The Saticoy Community Fridge team is interested in building new structures of support that create opportunities for community solidarity while de-emphasizing traditional forms of charity and philanthropy. We collect food donations from local producers, farmers, and community members and distribute them at our Saticoy Food Hub office.

Your help can look like:

1. Cleaning & restocking

Maintenance tasks include but are not limited to: sweeping, mopping, wiping down surfaces, cleaning inside and outside the fridge, watering plants,

Restocking is also part of cleaning because we want to make sure the fridge and pantry are always clean and full.

This also includes checking for spoilage and sorting through donations.

Volunteers can refer to the daily checklist in the office for a current and more specific list of chores.

2. Sorting and organizing

The food donations we receive need to be inspected and sorted upon arrival. This means separating bad, moldy or rotten food as well as expired food. The food then needs to get organized and put at the front fridge and pantry or in the back storage

3. Donation Pick-ups

You may be asked to pick up local donations from around Saticoy. Feel free to use a wagon, bike, Dooley, etc to facilitate transportation.

All other pickup roles are for those who have a car they can bring.

4. Current scheduled pick-ups that require a car

Community Action for Ventura County: Every other week on Tuesday.

Address: 621 Richmond Ave, Oxnard, CA 93030

5. Gleaning

Gleaning is the act of harvesting leftover or excess crops from farmers fields, neighbors gardens and possibly restaurants.

Depending on the amount of fruit, you can do this individually or with a team.

6.  Compost maintenance

We have a compost bin across the street in the Saticoy Library parking lot.

Office compost bin needs to be taken out daily

The compost bin needs to have a balance of green and brown material. Ideally a 2:1 ratio of brown to green, but 1:1 or half and half is fine too.

Who We Serve

We serve residents of Saticoy, CA and surrounding neighborhoods. Saticoy has been negatively impacted by food apartheid which we can heal through food sovereignty. The Saticoy Community Fridge can help us get there by empowering the community to become autonomous over what food they eat and where they get it. We want to give people the opportunity to acquire their food through a local free and sustainable source.

Volunteer hours can vary but the Community Fridge is open Tuesday-Friday from 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Volunteer: Anyone can help local veterans in need!

With Veterans Day approaching on November 11th, are you looking for ways to assist our veterans most in need - the ones who can use a hand up after they bravely served our country? We at Gold Coast Veterans Foundation have those opportunities for you!

Thanks to the many people who care enough to act, GCVF is in fact winning the battle to end homelessness and suffering for American veterans! Thousands of veterans have received individual 1-on-1 care, and nearly 230 high-risk veterans have been rescued from homelessness.

We’d be honored and grateful if you would join us right here on the front lines, repairing the lives of the people who walked into harm’s way for our nation. There are so many different things that anyone and everyone can do to ‘be the change’, and make a miracle happen.

See it For Yourself

Believe it or not, our biggest wish is for you to walk in through the front door and see what we do in person:

You might see our Mobile Veteran Outreach team, Army veteran Rafael, his giant service dog Leo, and team lead Cassandra, running out to rescue a homeless veteran on the street You might see them bringing that veteran back in after months or years on the street, to finally be cared for, and to begin repairing a broken life You might see us helping a veteran living with cancer, who had given up on his VA “Agent Orange” disability claim, to finally right a 50 year old wrong You might see our caring volunteers going out to an elderly veteran’s home to make sure they’re OK, and letting them know that even 5 decades later… someone still “has their back”

What you‘ll definitely see is a lean, fast, low-overhead organization that is 100% focused on saving, repairing, and improving the lives of our veterans.

Be a Volunteer

At GCVF, our volunteers are on the front lines providing free care and services to veterans and their families. No matter what your age, your skills have a vital role to play in our mission, caring for veterans. If you can fix a car, teach computer skills, have a compassionate conversations, we need you!

A veteran’s life is often saved on a phone or a computer screen, or perhaps by just driving a minivan to get a mobility-limited veteran to the doctor. Delivering hot food, warm clothes, or a blanket can make the difference between life and death. A visit to an elderly veteran’s home can identify a hidden problem or risk that will soon cause them great harm or death. Care and compassion costs nothing, but it’s more powerful than gold

No matter what your age, health, skills, or capacity allows you to do, your unique talents can make all the difference in the world to a veteran in need.

Volunteer: Harvest Fruit and Fight Hunger in Fillmore!

Where: We harvest fruit (and some veggies too) all across Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, although we need Harvest Leaders in Fillmore specifically.
