Volunteer: Student Internship

Intern

Studio Channel Islands’s Internship program is a unique learning opportunity unlike any other. Gain hands on experience in all areas of the gallery as well as events and programs. You will assistance with various staff and perform tasks that allow the gallery to function on a daily basis. The ideal candidate should have a love for the arts and a flexible schedule.

Preferred skills but not required

Proficient with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel and Word.
Experience.

 

Daily Gallery Tasks

Be the face of the gallery by maintaining our front desk. This includes greeting guests, answering the phone and transferring calls, and answering any questions guests may have about the art center.

Assist gallery staff in planning events, including gallery receptions and special events, education programs, and events at the Art Studios. While it is not required to attend every event, we strongly recommend that interns attend in order to gain experience and increase your professional network.

During your internship

During your internship you will spend time with every staff member to learn what they do and how they contribute to this organization. You will also spend time gallery hosting, which includes greeting customers and answer the phone.

You are also responsible for Social Media Updating

Experience you will gain: cash handling & sales, visual merchandising, gallery maintenance, installation, policy & artist contracts, committee experience, learning how to put together a budget, event planning, social media marketing and so much more!

 

Ending Project

Required: To complete your internship you are required to do an ending project.

This is a project should encompass and pursue what you are most interested in whether it is event planning or social media development, it really can be anything, use your past experience and creativity. It is important to not choose your project right away, spend some time getting to know how this origination works first. Once you come up with an idea, talk to a staff member. You will need to present a proposal to be approved by our Executive Director. You are allowed to team up with another intern to do a group ending project, if both of your interests in projects are similar or compatible. Staff members will be here to help you along the way.

Docents are a select group of high-level volunteers responsible for assisting the Studio Channel Islands Art Center (SCIAC) staff in the Blackboard Gallery. This unpaid volunteer position plays a significant role that allows the gallery to properly function from gallery events to daily galley sittings. These dedicated individuals will have the unique opportunity to gain exposure to the mechanisms of a professional art gallery as well as contribute valuable visitor services to a nonprofit organization.

Primary Responsibilities

Introduce visitors to the world-class art exhibited in the Blackboard Gallery
Provide dynamic, engaging and meaningful experiences
Create opportunities for dialogue and the exchange of ideas

Qualifications

Effective communicator
Comfortable initiating visitor contact
Possess a love and appreciation of art and culture
Ability to work well independently as well as in groups
Demonstrated ability to work well with people of diverse backgrounds
Enthusiasm for learning and teaching
Friendly and outgoing attitude
Reliability is critical

Expectations
