WriteGirl
WriteGirl empowers girls through creative writing and mentoring within a community of women writers.
Description:
WriteGirl pairs professional women writers with teen girls from low-income areas in central Los Angeles for one-on-one mentoring, focusing on creative writing. Once a month, the entire group (now more than 300 members) gathers for a full-day of writing activities, highlighting different writing genres such as journalism, songwriting, poetry, fiction, and screenwriting.
History:
WriteGirl launched in 2001, with about 25 women and 20 girls. In six years, we have grown to a membership of more than 60 mentor/mentee pairs, a full advisory board, a strong volunteer corps and a growing list of foundation, governmental, corporate and individual supporters. WriteGirl's rapid growth is proof of the great need for this kind of creative outlet and educational program for teen girls.
