Agency Details:
Rebuilding Together Ventura County
Rebuilding Together is the nation's largest volunteer home rehabilitation organization dedicated to preserving and revitalizing houses and communities. In partnership with the community, Rebuilding Together rebuilds owner-occupied homes, shelters, and non-profit facilities for low-income residents - particularly the elderly or those with disabilities - so they may live independently with dignity, in warmth and safety.
Description:
Throughout the year affiliates like Rebuilding Together Ventura County help ease the lives of thousands of low-income, elderly and disabled homeowners. While typical home modifications include installing wheelchair ramps, railings, grab bars, and bathing access equipment, Rebuilding Together provides other repairs and improvements to allow homeowners to stay where they want to be - in their homes. All repairs and improvements are provided to recipients free of charge. Volunteers are used to do the actual labor with the supervision of volunteer professional laborers.
History:
Note: Our next project is scheduled for May 3rd in Simi Valley. Rebuilding Together was started 26 years ago and was originally called Christmas in April. There are approximately 260 affiliates across the country. Rebuilding Together Ventura County was formed in February, 2005 with a grant from Countrywide. The agencies adopted Strategic Plan includes a goal of working in every city in Ventura County in the next 3 years. We have had large events in Oxnard's La Colonia area where we rehabilitated four homes of low-income homeowners, including replacing bathroom fixtures and cabinets, putting in new kitchen cabinets, repairing floors, putting in new fencing, repairing plumbing, painting the houses inside and out, landscaping and much more. We have also rehabilitated the old Oxnard high school site which houses non-profit agencies. We have done single homes in Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Oxnard, and Ventura. In November of 2006 we rehabbed four homes in Newbury Park. In May of 2007 we worked on six homes in Santa Paula. We have a large event planned for Simi Valley on May 3rd, Saturday, 2008.
