School On Wheels Inc.
School on Wheels is a non-profit organization providing one-on-one tutoring and school supplies to homeless children K-12th Grade. We have been working with homeless children since 1993 and have a large group of dedicated volunteer tutors who meet their students every week to help them succeed in school. Unfortunately the number of homeless children is increasing and so too is our need for volunteer tutors who can dedicate an hour a week to mentor a homeless student.
Description:
Homeless children face challenges that make their academic success extremely difficult. School on Wheels is looking for volunteer tutors to help overcome these obstacles. Volunteer tutors are the heart of School on Wheels. Our tutors are positive role models and help homeless children succeed in school, Tutors come from all backgrounds and professions and make a difference!
History:
School on Wheels was founded over 12 years ago by Agnes Stevens, a former elementary school teacher with over 30 years of experience who started tutoring homeless kids on a park bench in Santa Monica. School on Wheels, now has over 400 tutors working throughout Southern California. We tutor homeless children living in shelters, motels, group foster homes, cars and on the street.

Overall Experience

Tutoring homeless children is tremendously rewarding.

Volunteering for School on Wheels has been a wonderful experience. It has given me the opportunity to help a homeless child develop a love of learning, and to gain a sense of confidence about his talents and his importance in the world.
Nothing could be more rewarding than seeing my student's face light up when he sees me. He is so grateful and so proud to have his own tutor. Volunteering with him for just an hour or two a week has done so much -- for both of us. posted on May 28, 2005 |

Giving a homeless child hope and skills to learn is a wonderful, selfish for me.

School on Wheels is a unique organization. Not only does it help homeless children with homework and and learning but it shows that child someone cares enough about them to show up every week. Most homeless children don't have any individual tutoring or consistency in their lives. posted by cmeek on May 14, 2005 |

Overall Experience

Schools on Wheels gave me the support/tools to let these children know that the community cares about them.

I worked at the Lighthouse in Oxnard for several years. Schools on Wheels is great to offer the children whatever supplies they need for school. I provide the encouragement and help to move beyond any challenge they may be facing. Sometimes it's a difficult math segment and other times it may be reading a book or drawing. I enjoy the diversity of the work but the consistency of watching one child grow. posted by wheetie501 on May 14, 2005 |
