The Coalition To End Family Violence
The Coalition to End Family Violence strives to provide direct services to victims of violence and sexual assault, to educate the community regarding violence against women, children and men, and to prevent the cycle of violence.
Description:
For 30 years The Coalition to End Family Violence has provided women, children and men with the tools and support they need to create safe homes, safe families and safe communities. Our philosophy is to break the cycle of violence through direct services, prevention, training and treatment for all people affected by domestic violence and sexual assault.
The Coalition provides a continuum of services for those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault, including survivors, perpetrators, family members and children. Our services include a 24-hour Hotline (805) 656-1111, 24-hour Bilingual Hotline (800) 300-2181, Emergency Shelter (805) 656-1111, Counseling, Legal Services, Batterers Intervention, Crisis Response and Intervention, Child Abuse Intervention, State-certified Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention Training Program, Parenting and Anger Management Classes.
At The Coalition to End Family Violence battered women receive help in a number of ways through inter-agency collaboration. They often contact the agency through the domestic violence hotline. When a woman calls the hotline, a trained crisis intervention counselor answers the phone and offers crisis counseling and referrals to other services. If the counselor and woman agree that shelter placement is necessary, the counselor will attempt to find a bed in The Coalition’s emergency shelter. If necessary, the shelter employee and/or hotline counselor will also help the woman arrange transportation to the shelter.
The shelter is a 30-day emergency residential program for battered women and their children. The Coalition provides food, clothing, personal care items and medical assistance. Clients have access to individual counseling, support groups, parenting classes and legal advocacy. Children also receive counseling and play therapy. Services are available in English and Spanish. A screening interview is required for admission however but there are no fees required.
Shelter personnel accompany clients to medical facilities, police departments and court as needed. They provide technical and emotional support throughout the entire process, including crisis counseling/intervention, needs assessment and linkage to other services and agencies, and assistance obtaining restraining orders. Counseling is available to victims and their families.
The Legal Services Program is the only non-profit agency in the county to provide free legal services to domestic violence and sexual assault victims. Under the direction of a licensed attorney, the program provides family law assistance in divorce, paternity and restraining order cases, with priority given to cases involving child custody, abduction and domestic violence issues. Legal Services helps clients understand and take action in all phases of their court case, including pleading preparation, filing, service of process and instruction on how to appear in court without an attorney. To be eligible for this program, applicants must be low income, survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual assault, and currently receiving counseling, in a support group or receiving shelter services from the Coalition.
The Coalition to End Family Violence is a court approved provider of Court Ordered and voluntary Supervised Visitation for parents and their children. Our monitors are highly trained Marriage Family Therapists offering both safety and emotional support to all parties.
The Crisis Response Intervention Team (CRI) is the only rape crisis program in Ventura County. CRI advocates are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to accompany survivors of sexual assault to medical-legal examinations. The advocates provide technical and emotional support throughout the entire process, including crisis counseling and intervention, needs assessment and linkage to other social services.
The Coalition offers comprehensive counseling services to survivors and perpetrators of domestic violence and sexual assault. Our Marriage and Family Therapists provide individual, family and group counseling services. We offer support groups for victims of domestic violence, rape, sexual assault, and incest/molestation. Counseling fees depend on income and enrollment circumstances.
The Batterers Intervention Program is a county-approved program that helps participants modify behavior patterns and break the cycle of violence by learning new skills around power and control, accountability and communication. Men’s and women’s Spanish and English speaking groups meet weekly for 2 hours at various locations throughout Ventura County. Participation can be voluntary or court-mandated (52-week program). Fees depend on income and enrollment circumstances.
The Child Abuse Intervention Program, a County approved program, assists participants in improving parenting skills to prevent violence. Participants gain positive family dynamics by establishing a belief system based on mutual respect and communication. Co-ed Spanish and English language groups are held 2 hours weekly at the Coalition Volunteer or court mandated parents may attend the 52 week program. Qualified counselors provide education and counseling services to parents who have a history of abusive behavior towards their children. Parents will develop an increased understanding of the impact of abuse on their children and increased knowledge of effective and non-violent anger management and parenting strategies. Parents will successfully implement these anger management and parenting strategies at home. The final outcome is to improve anger management and parenting practices, child abuse will be reduced and family systems will be strengthened.
The Coalition offers the only combined domestic violence and sexual assault Certified Crisis Intervention Training program in Ventura County. Our program covers diverse topics such as domestic violence, child and elder abuse, alcohol and chemical dependency, rape, self-defense, advocacy, and the legal system. The training is mandatory for all Coalition staff and client-related volunteers. Training sessions provide Continuing Education Units to health care and social service professionals.
The Rape Crisis Prevention Community Outreach Coordinator offers age-appropriate curricula for elementary, middle and high school students, college students, people with disabilities, seniors, and other under served populations that take into account cultural norms and population-specific needs. Our curriculum for the Rape Prevention Workshop is adaptable enough to fit a diverse audience and adaptable to various academic levels. The curriculum is comprehensive and adaptable and can be modified to meet the needs of various participants.
The Coalition to End Family Violence has changed the landscape for victims who once suffered in silence. It helps restore safety and integrity to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Living a life with integrity creates an environment that nourishes the integrity of others.
History:
In 1976, a group of concerned citizens in Ventura County gathered together in response to a growing need for services for battered women. Committed to helping women flee life-threatening situations and to educating the general public about the impact of domestic violence.
Today, almost 30 years later, the Coalition to End Family Violence is Ventura County's leading bilingual and bicultural family agency dedicated to providing women, children and men the tools and support needed to create safe homes, safe families, and safe communities. Our philosophy is to break the cycle of violence through direct services, prevention, training, and treatment for all people affected by domestic violence and sexual assault: victims, perpetrators, family members and especially children.
