Make-A-Wish Foundation Of The Tri-Counties
Mission: The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Our chapter serves children in Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties in Central California.
Description:
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Tri-Counties serves eligible children between the ages 2 ½ and 18 without regard to race, gender, creed, socio-economic or cultural background. Our chapter is committed never to decline a qualified wish referral nor to limit the scope of a child's imagination for his or her wish due to lack of funds. The Make-A-Wish Foundation becomes aware of a child's wish through wish referrals, which are accepted from parents and guardians or medical professionals, such as doctors, nurses, social workers or child-life specialists. Children may also refer themselves. Most wishes fall under one of four categories: "I want to have..." "I want to go..." "I want to be..." "I want to meet..."
History:
John and Linda Jensen of Camarillo cherished the opportunity to spend time at the Kennedy Space Center with their son Jon, who was battling Neuroblastoma. The trip had been made possible by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Los Angeles. Shortly after Jon lost his battle to the disease, the Jensens gathered several individuals to establish a local chapter that would serve children with life-threatening medical conditions in Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. Since its inception in 1985, with a staff of only four and the help of more than 70 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Tri-Counties has granted more than 600 heartfelt wishes to children in the Tri-Counties.
