Description:
Braille Institute seeks to reinforce the confidence, self-esteem and dignity of individuals who are visually impaired, enabling them to live, attend school and work as they choose. We offer integrated educational, social and recreational programs and services in an environment of hope and encouragement. Generous donor and dedicated efforts by more than 900 volunteers enable staff to provide training, programs and services without charge.
History:
J. Robert Atkinson, who lost his own sight in a 1912 accident, received a $25,000 grant from Mary and John Longyear to advance the educational and literary achievements of the blind. Atkinson founded Universal Braille Press in 1919 located in Los Angeles, which later incorporated as Braille Institute of America, Inc.on September 30, 1929. Braille Institute expanded to provide a full range of services including the National Library Services regional library for people of all ages who are blind or physically or reading disabled. Services extend throughout Southern California directed from five regional centers. Braille Institute, Santa Barbara Regional Center serves Ventura County and Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. Services are provided free of charge.
