RAIN Project Transitional Living Center
The RAIN Project Transitional Living Center provides housing, and necessary training and resources, to help individuals and families successfully transition to independent living.
Description:
The RAIN Project Transitional Living Center provides housing and needed resources (i.e., job training, money management, parenting classes) to help individuals and families re-establish independent living. RAIN provides an exciting context in which many people's concerns, resources and creative talents come together. Besides being a cooperative effort on the parts of several different County agencies and departments, cities throughout Ventura County, and many churches and community groups as well as individuals pitch in to meet the wide range of needs of the homeless population.
History:
The anticipated arrival of El Nino precipitated the formation of the RAIN (River Dweller's Aid Intercity Network) Project in November of 1997. The RAIN Project not only established a Transitional Living Center for the displaced river bottom dwellers, but also acted as the County's Winter Warming Shelter for the winter of 1997-98. In June of 1998 we moved from the Camarillo State Hospital site to the Camarillo Airport, housing a maximum of 70 individuals, and continuing to operate on a 7 days/week/24 hr./day basis. We moved to the Lewis Road location in December of 2003. We have served over 1000 individuals, half of whom are children since November of 1997. We continue our mission to "end homelessness, one person at a time."
