Community Roots Garden
The mission of the Community Roots Garden is to grow a community of gardens at the Community Roots Garden and, by example, in our neighborhood yield healthy local produce. We are working to share produce with neighbors and friends in need; to empower one another through learning, teaching, and cooperating to nourish ourselves justly, sustainably, and self sufficiently; and to restore wellness to the land the human spirit and the community through our core commitments to hunger relief, sustainability and caring for the community.
Description:
Community Roots Garden currently operates, through volunteer labor, a one-acre garden at 2300 W. Gonzales Road in Oxnard. The harvest from this garden goes to local food pantries, shelters and other outlets to help those in need. The garden also serves as a food growing training facility. The Community Roots Garden is a ministry of the North Oxnard United Methodist Church. Workdays are on Saturdays from 9:00 - 2:00, and Tuesdays from 5:00 pm to sunset.
History:
The garden’s groundbreaking was on May 2 of 2009. Already roughly 30 percent of the land has been planted and the garden is off to a very strong start. A core of volunteers has been with the garden from the beginning and new volunteers show up regularly. The garden is already touted as a local model, and many have come to learn from our garden for one reason or another.
